Could the New Moon Knight Series “Fix” the Character?

By WALLY MONK – Paint Monk’s Library Editor When I heard that Moon Knight was being relaunched this summer (followed in a month or two by my favorite Jungle Lord, Ka-Zar), I was filled with excitement but also with much […]

Comics Unlimited Reprints PM Library Glut Interview

My interview with Donald Glut was reprinted in the latest issue of Comics Unlimited! If you haven’t read this new bi-monthly yet, it’s one of the best comic mags I’ve enjoyed since Comics Journal was on the shelves years ago. […]

INTERVIEW: Jim Zub’s Conan #19 Coming Out March 10

(AUTHOR’S NOTE: It has been no secret that I have had issues with Marvel’s relaunch of Robert E. Howard’s Conan. The one bright spot has been the writing of Jim Zub. I was a fan before he took up the […]

EDITORIAL: Ka-Zar’s Death? Sorry, No Apology Is Due

Scout Comics “JAZZ LEGEND” Coming in May

PREVIEW AND REVIEW OF JC LACEK’S NEW SIX-ISSUE MINI SERIES

Check out my review of “JAZZ LEGEND” coming this May from Scout Comics. It’s not my cup of tea by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s well-written with excellent art.

A Deeper Look at Marvel’s Darkchild

SUNDAY CLASSICS @ Comic-Watch Feature X-Men: Magik – Storm & Illyana TPB

Head on over to Comic-Watch where I take a deeper look at Chris Claremont’s “Magik: Storm & Illyana” series from 1984. It’s a much more in-depth and critical review than the one I presented here last fall.
When you’re done, check out a fun commentary that looks at other comic characters – beside Illyana – who don’t have a soul or have “soul issues!”

LOOKING BACK – Classic 1980s Comic Covers

What were your most memorable covers? Add Your Favorites to the Comments Below!

It’s hard to believe I’ve been collecting comic books for nearly forty years.

As a kid, I kept my comics in a nightstand next to my bed. At least a few times a day, I’d look through my comic drawer. If there wasn’t time to take out and read (or re-read, in those days) a good one, I’d sift through the covers just to get my comic book fix for the day.

For long-time collectors, I’m sure there are some specific covers which spark memories of when you first started treasuring your comics. These don’t have to necessarily be hot comics or iconic imagery. These are just covers that remind you of your “younger days.

Maybe I’m unnecessarily “dating” myself with these covers, but here’s a list of my “Top 10” most memorable covers … (Read More)

Paint Monk’s Library Reviews Swordquest TPB

Swordquest: Realworld Review at Www.comic-watch.com

Head on over to www.comic-watch.com to enjoy this week’s entry of Sci-Fi Sunday.

It’s been a hectic week here at Paint Monk’s Library. The gracious staff over at CW agreed to run my Swordquest piece this weekend instead of next while I play catch-up on other articles I’ve had to neglect with the start of the Lenten season.

Chad Bowers, Chris Sims and Ghostwriter X have put together a tale of 1980s video games, highly valuable swords, and an inter dimensional dilemma which is a hugely entertaining read. I’m not normally a fan of comics like this, but you’ll see why Swordquest: Realworld is a winner in every sense of the word.

Check it out at Comic Watch using the links below:

Thank you, Comic Watch Staff, for letting me “kill two birds with one stone” this busy week.

Black Panther – Great Story, Solid Message

COMMENTARY: T’Challa embodies human decency and a True “King”

I’m not going to write a review of Marvel’s new Black Panther movie here. It’s been done all over the web, and all you need to do is Google “Black Panther Movie Review” and you’ll have dozens of sites to choose from to read a comprehensive review or plot synopsis.

Whatever you do, though, go and see this movie.

It’s tremendously entertaining, like most Marvel movies, and it’s full of good messages – most pertain to the common good over the good of the individual. Part of the story line shows that even good people have demons – but we’ve always got to strive to be better, especially when we can see the ugly truth of the past.

I attended a Tuesday night showing of the film, and the theater was packed.

The blog-o-sphere is abuzz with random thoughts … (Read More)

SCI-FI SUNDAY: Logan’s Run #1 (Marvel, 1977)

Short-Lived Marvel Comics Series Lasted Only 7 Issues

From the Internet Movie Datebase:

In the year 2274, young residents enjoy an idyllic, hedonistic lifestyle within the protective confines of a domed city. The general belief is that when each person turns 30, they are reincarnated for another blissful life cycle. Those who know the much darker truth become “runners” and flee to a hidden sanctuary. When law enforcement officer Logan (Michael York) goes undercover to locate the refuge, he winds up instead trying to initiate a revolution with runner Jessica (Jenny Agutter).

Logan’s Run was a movie based on a novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson.

Marvel’s adaptation of the series lasted only seven issues – five issues to recount what happened in the film, and two issues to come up with stories about what happened after the novel and the film ended. (Read More)

The 1st “Paint Monk’s Library Contest Giveaway!”

Contest begins tonight with launch of Sci-Fi Sundays!

In honor of the New Mutants: Dead Souls series debuting next month, I’ve decided to host the first “Paint Monk’s Library” Comic Book Giveaway Contest! If it works well, this is something I’ll do at least a few times each year.

As you know, Magik (AKA Illyana Rasputin) is one of the more popular New Mutants characters. What I’ve got up for grabs is a copy of Uncanny X-Men #160, which features the very first appearance of Illyana as an adult when she gets back from Limbo. It’s a CGC-graded 9.6 copy, too.

To participate, please do one or more of the following:

1) Share the link to the Paint Monk’s Library in your favorite forums, on Facebook pages, and with your friends. For every THREE shares, you’ll get ONE entry into the contest.
2) Follow “Paint Monk’s Library” on Blogger.

Sketching the Paint Monk…for only $15!

A Big Thank you to Boris Grozev for immortalizing me in cariacature

Art isn’t cheap, and good art for cheap is nearly impossible to find. In my online wanderings I stumbled across Boris Grozev, from Italy, on one of the comic book forums. He was offering a limited special where he’d draw a sketch of any character you wanted for only $15 US.
This is what he came up with for the “Paint Monk.”
When I commissioned the sketch, I suggested perhaps a cross in his right hand (your first priority is always at your right hand) and a box of comic books in the left. I’m pleased with what he came up with, although this monk looks a little more serious than I tend to be…
Oh, well. It’s my fault. I wasn’t specific enough and for $15, you can’t expect anyone to

Sci-Fi Sundays Begin At “Paint Monk’s Library”

Every Weekend, I’ll Highlight Classic Stories from Two Different Genres

Sci-Fi Sundays begin tonight at 8 PM CST.
I’ve been so busy with my ministry, studies and writing for Comic-Watch that I’ve been neglecting my friends here at Paint Monk’s Library. That’s something I need to remedy, and I will do so beginning tonight.
Starting this evening at 8 PM CST, I’ll be posting reviews of classic stories from the Science Fiction genre. Weekends in the future will offer “Swords-and-Sorcery Saturday” and “Sci-Fi Sunday” from this point forward.
Thanks for reading at The Library, and please let me know what you think of these new features by adding your thoughts and comments as the stories appear.
Stories for Saturday and Sundays will always (barring a major problem) be posted by 8 PM CST. It’s my way of trying to establish some

Mulching, Sergio Aragones & Groo the Wanderer

Grab Some Cheese Dip Before Reading about the World’s Most Ignorant Barbarian

Whatcha doin’ Groo?

By WALLY MONK
Paint Monk’s Library Editor

“There once was a fighter named Groo,
And he wasn’t like me, or like you;
The stories were swell,
of this dumb ne’er do well,
so his fan base most certainly grew!”
 – The Paint Monk

If you’re a fan of the swords-and-sorcery genre in comic books, you’ve no doubt heard of Groo the Wanderer, by the team extraordinaire of Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier. Groo is a walking antonym of Conan the Barbarian.

Where Conan is muscular and commanding, Groo is flabby and a wimp. Where Conan can take charge and rescue damsels in distress, Groo will rescue the dragon and leave the damsel tied up instead. In other words, he’s a complete buffoon.

Long before the days of funny fantasy comics like … (Read More)
