Over 1K blog views in the last week – and some thoughts from the Paint Monk
Thanks to everyone here for LOTS of traffic to this blog in the last few weeks. According to the stats here on Blogger, almost 1,100 people stopped by to view Paint Monk’s Library in the last week, with over 400 people visiting one post alone. Color me impressed – and extremely grateful to you!
I’ve also received some interesting correspondence. In addition to increased blog readership, I’ve received a half-dozen email messages this week, and all were very insightful. Several individuals said they were “grateful” to hear about a religious monk having secular hobbies, and that gave them “hope” for the Church. One man said he was glad I was talking about “hobbies” and not preaching, as he believes some religious blogs do.
Three of the emails, however, were critical of my topics. One lady was very upset that I was involved in tabletop miniature gaming and asked me to repent. Another said that comic books were vulgar, and she could not believe that I would talk about them, let alone “horror” stories. Finally, one man insisted that HP Lovecraft , the subject of an earlier post, was a satanist (he may well have been, at least in thought process) and “how dare I” do a blog post promoting or sending people to his work.
Rather than write emails to everyone, I’m going to address them all here in the public forum.
So please, those of you who come here specifically for chat about comics and tabletop games, humor me for at least one post and read today’s thoughts. They may give you insight also into what I write, why I read comics and play miniature games, and why being involved in secular culture is critical for any priest, brother, or genuinely good-intentioned person.

Daredevil is Catholic. Say what? More
on that in the next blog series, Catholicism in Comics. |
Ministry to me is about meeting people – all people – where they are and trying to bring them closer to God. We don’t do that by preaching, at least not by judgmental preaching. As a Catholic, I try daily to do that by example. “Wow. That guy plays Warhammer and he’s a monk? That’s really cool.” or “That warband is cool, Father Wally, and your church sounds beautiful. Maybe I’ll go there one Sunday.”
It’s very easy to be the guy who stands at a pulpit and condemns those down below. You’re reading the wrong things. You’re doing the wrong things. Shame on you for reading comics. You’re going to hell because those games are satanic. You watch Game of Thrones? Don’t let me see that smut. And the examples go on and on.
In my opinion, it is religious leaders like that who chase God’s children AWAY from the church and create a culture of people who “hate” religion.
In the words of the Gospel of John, chapter 4 verse 5 – “They are from the world, and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them.”
We are all children of God – and we are all sinners – from this Paint Monk, typing away at his laptop between Masses to the Holy Father, Pope Francis, sitting in Rome. And if together, we can look at hobbies, from comics, to movies, to miniatures and RPGs, then we have begun a dialogue. We’ve established legitimate common ground, and from there, it’s up to people to ask me questions. Live by example – and “let your light so shine before men, so they can see your good works and glorify your Father, who is in Heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
God loves us all – the gamers, the comic book nerds (myself included), the priests, the lay people, the rich, the poor, the fans of HP Lovecraft, the fans of CS Lewis, the trans-gendered, and the cis-gendered, the confused, the know-it-alls, the sick and the healthy. He loves the congressman who was accused of sexual assault and he loves the victim.
Let us not get God’s love of everyone mixed up with approval of any particular behavior.
It’s all up to us to make the choice to come to God’s table under his terms or not. It’s my job to put everything out there – the worldly and the supernatural – and to let ALL people know that there is an invitation to God’s table.
And whether they choose to come to that table and abide by GOD’S terms is completely up to them.
OK. Preaching Over. Thank you for listening.
Finally, the last email was a man asking me to do an article about Catholicism and Christianity in comics. Does it appear? Are any superheroes or villains “Christian?” That’s a great topic, and it will be the subject of a new blog series here once the Horror series is finished.
Thanks for the views – thanks for reading this “sermon” – and I promise we’ll stick to comics and miniatures from here on out. And for those of you who thought enough of me and my writing to send an email, I hope this answered your questions. God bless!
